Isla Vista Recreation & Park District (IVRPD) and the UCSB AS Environmental Affairs Board (EAB) are
gearing up to celebrate Isla Vista Earth Day, an annual gathering that promotes use without waste and encourages time with good company. IV Earth Day will feature plant potting, a clothing swap, T-shirt tie-dyeing, student tabling, an appearance by the Goleta Valley Library Bookvan, and a plywood mosaic that all attendees will have a hand in painting and assembling throughout the day. Additionally, slated to perform at the festival are the bands Junkyard, Fig Jam,Danny Vista, and Left on Read. This event is possible only through partnerships between IVRPD, EAB, UCSB AS Recycling, and IVCRC.
“Earth Day reminds us that protecting our planet is not just a one-day commitment – it’s a shared, lifelong
responsibility,” said Santa Barbara County Board Chair Laura Capps. “By coming together in celebration, education, an action, we strengthen our connection to the Earth and to one another. Thank you to IVRPD and the EAB for fostering this community spirit and putting environmental stewardship at the heart of everything they do.”
“The Environmental Affairs Board is super excited for our annual Earth Day event in Isla Vista. Planning and throwing this event has been extremely fulfilling – we have been coordinating with different clubs and local orgs since Fall quarter! We are ready to enjoy a day full of celebration, sustainability, live music, and lots of games and food for the local community. We hope to see you all there to celebrate our Earth!” , said Board chairs Ash, Anna and Bianca of the UCSB Environmental Affairs Board.
“The Goleta Valley Library Bookvan is thrilled to participate in this wonderful event that promotes our community parks and natural spaces to celebrate our connections to each other and the environment,” said City of Goleta Neighborhood Services Director Jaime A. Valdez. “We welcome this opportunity to learn, share, and appreciate the environment’s beauty and importance in such a unique setting.”
“Abundant parks, majestic nature, and lovely landscapes are the lifeblood of Isla Vista, and there is no better way to
reaffirm their centrality than by bringing the whole community together for an afternoon on the grass,” said IVRPD
General Manager Kimberly Kiefer. “The District looks forward to an afternoon that will match the vibrancy of our town’s ecology.”
This free outdoor event will start on Saturday, April 26 at 1pm at Anisq’Oyo Park, and will run for as long as supplies last. IVRPD encourages guests to attend the event by bicycle, by skateboard, by foot, by bus—direct routes to the park include Santa Barbara MTD Lines 11, 15x, 25x, and 27—or by other means of alternative transportation. Guests may request ADA accommodations by emailing ivrpd@ivparks.org or by calling (805) 968-2017.
