Each year on June 20th, the world celebrates World Refugee Day, the international day to honour people who have been forced to flee.

Together, we can champion their right to seek safety, build support for their economic and social inclusion, and advocate for solutions to their plight. Please join us – your United Nations Association of Santa Barbara and Tri Counties – to commemorate World Refugee Day and hear our special guest speaker.

Biar Kuek is a former refugee from South Sudan and the founder of the South Sudan Center of America, a nonprofit that assists refugees. He started out as a janitor and became an audit manager at Las Vegas Sands Corporation. Biar earned a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and an MBA from Regis University. In 2014, Biar was named to Fortune’s “Heroes of the 500” for helping other children suffering from persecution and poverty.

Biar is a proof-of-concept humanitarian subject matter expert and has been a keynote speaker at the Beverly Hilton and University of California, Los Angeles among many other venues. In 2020, Biar testified in the United States Congress during the House Judiciary Committee Hearing on Refugees.

Biar now owns and operates real estate and healthcare businesses and provides coaching and training to organizations committed to helping refugees build a new purpose-driven life.

Biar serves on the board of USA for the United Nations High Commission On Refugees, Refugee Congress, and ECDC African Community Center.
This event will be on Zoom to allow for greatest participation, and will have a Q&A for the audience.
