For more than three decades, I have worked with people in very different environments—families, schools, correctional institutions, nonprofit organizations, executive leadership, youth development, and communities facing complex social challenges. The settings have changed. The underlying lesson has not.

We often begin by trying to change what we can see: behavior, performance, outcomes, systems, programs, policies, or circumstances. Those things matter. But beneath every organization, family, and community are people. And beneath people’s behavior are deeper realities—identity, beliefs, character, relationships, emotional maturity, purpose, and the ways we understand ourselves and others.

That is why my approach to leadership begins with the person. Not because systems don’t matter. But because ultimately people create, lead, sustain, repair, and transform systems.
