On June 4, volunteers around the country will Wear Orange to raise awareness about the gun violence epidemic in our nation.
Orange is the color that Hadiya Pendelton’s friends wore in her honor after she was shot and killed in 2015 at the age of 15. After her death, her friends asked people to stand up, speak out, and Wear Orange to raise awareness. Since then, Moms Demand Action and other supporters organize Wear Orange events to remember the lives lost to gun violence.
This year, volunteers are making thousands of Soul Boxes to represent the lives lost or injured by gun violence, accident, or suicide. These hand-folded boxes (images attached) will be part of a powerful installation on the National Mall in September.
Locally, the Santa Barbara Chapter of Moms Demand Action will gather on Wednesday, May 26 to fold 100 boxes to represent the 100 people who die from gun violence every day. Every day, more than 100 Americans are killed with guns and more than 230 are shot and wounded. Gun suicide claims the lives of over 23,000 people in the United States each year, and firearms have become the leading cause of death for children and teens in the United States.
We invite our community members to fold their own Soul Boxes by following the easy instructions here. Soul Boxes can be dropped off to Moms Demand Action volunteers at the Central Library (40 E. Anapamu Street) on Wednesday, June 2 between 11am – 2pm. All Soul Boxes will be part of a display at the Central Library for the month of June.
