Santa Barbara filmmaker Kevin McKiernan’s new documentary, From Wounded Knee to Standing Rock: A Reporter’s Journey
A Q&A will follow the film with the filmmaker and special guests from the Yurok Tribe, Willard Carlson (a protagonist in the film) and his son, Pergish, who will open and close the event with a Yurok song and drumming.
The film focuses on the legacy of Native activists who took part in the 71-day uprising at Wounded Knee in 1973, the longest civil disorder in U.S. history.
Santa Barbara filmmaker Kevin McKiernan is a veteran foreign correspondent, photographer, and filmmaker whose coverage of American Indians has received national awards in the US, including a nomination for the Pulitzer Prize. His reporting has taken him to some of the world’s most troubled regions—from El Salvador to Iraq, from West Africa to Afghanistan and Syria—but the Wounded Knee story remains the formative event of his career: www.kevinmckiernan.com
The documentary was shot by the legendary, Oscar-winning cinematographer and social documentarian Haskell Wexler (1922-2015).
