Shtetl Home Companion, Santa Barbara’s radio/musical theater company, will present its latest original play “Nights in Smyrna,” at the Fine Line Gallery in Santa Barbara’s La Cumbre Mall on Saturday, September 5 at 6:00 pm. The drama’s setting is Ottoman Smyrna—when a young man, helping run his family’s tavern, comes of age in turbulent times.
The drama begins in 1910, when the famous Ladino singer Malka Algazi dazzles a local crowd, singing in the neighborhood tavern of her relatives in Smyrna, Turkey. Ruven, the tavern keeper’s son, an ud player, who has the chance of a lifetime to accompany Malka, is distracted by his love for a local beauty with a tragic past. Meanwhile, the gentleman thief known as “The Kobra” strikes again at a jewelry store on Frank Street in Smyrna’s European district! And World War One and its heartbreak are just around the corner–when the harmony that supports the community of Turks, Greeks, Armenians, and Jews in “Infidel Smyrna” will be destroyed forever
“Nights in Smyrna” includes musical accompaniment by Flor de Kanela playing centuries-old Sephardic Jewish melodies. The one-hour performance will be at the Fine Line Gallery in the La Cumbre Mall, on Saturday September 5th at 6:00 PM. $20 admission. Seating limited.
