Opera Santa Barbara is thrilled to present Il Postino (The Postman), our first opera by Mexican-American composer Daniel Catán on March 7 and 8 at the historic Lobero Theatre. A major contemporary composer, Catán is known for his sweeping, impressionistic music and bringing Spanish-language opera into the international repertory.
Il Postino (The Postman) weaves together the rush of romance, the endurance of friendship, and the danger that lurks at the intersection of art and politics. Join us for this important company premiere and Opera Santa Barbara’s first opera in Spanish.
Based on the Oscar-winning film, Il Postino (The Postman) chronicles the enduring friendship between exiled Chilean poet Pablo Neruda and Mario, the shy postman who brings him his fan mail. Mario becomes Neruda’s student, learning the art of poetry to woo a local barmaid and to express the struggles of his fellow working-class villagers who live on a small Italian island in the 1950s.
Kostis Protopapas conducts. Crystal Manich, last with OSB for The Cunning Little Vixen, returns to direct. Arnold Rawls makes his OSB debut as the poet and Daniel Montenegro last seen in 2011’s Trouble in Tahiti as the titular postman.
