Pillars 2024 is the culmination of a working series that local oil painter, Bobby Williams, has been exploring for five years. The show will mark the completion of Williams’ 100th painting in the series and will be on display at Gallery Los Olivos throughout the month of July.
Williams was inspired to first explore this series after moving to the central coast from New York City ten years ago. Having worked in fine-dining restaurants there, he was trained to remember the names of farmers, purveyors, and regions from which the best restaurants in the world acquired their most prized ingredients. Exceptional produce was shrouded in commendation: the unequivocal TriStar strawberry!, the revered Ojai Pixie!.. Organic! Biodynamic!, hand-picked!, seasonal!, local! …But what about the people who picked those strawberries?
Pillars 2024 explores the tension between one’s work and one’s identity. Williams invites you to reflect upon the rich and complicated history of migrant agricultural workers on the central coast: “It is a tale of both repression and progress… of dreams, and of the dignity in hard work and human resilience.”
