Take a deep dive with guest facilitators, Casey Pfeifer and Wes Cooke of 7th Generation Design and the WBLT team into the world of plant propagation in service of ecological function and production – whether that’s growing your own food, sequestering more carbon, increasing biodiversity, improving water resources, creating shade, windbreak and privacy screens, growing plants for sale, etc. Explore what works best for you, your region, and your ecology. Discover how to address ecological needs on your property through climate appropriate plants, different propagation methods, and a variety of irrigation techniques.

Get Hands-on!

We will guide participants through the best practices for seed and cutting preparation methods, present a simple and low-cost option for constructing air-pruning and automated mist propagation beds, explore the various irrigation emitter options, and demonstrate a portable and off-grid automated irrigation control system.

  • Air-pruning beds allow you to grow trees and plants from seed or cuttings with highly-branched, non-circling root structures (unlike typical nursery stock grown in slick-walled, black plastic pots that often develop stunted root systems from high soil temperatures and circling roots). Trees with air-pruned root balls are healthier and stronger and can put on growth in one year that would take conventionally-grown trees three!
  • Automated mist propagation beds create a perfect environment for growing many genetically-identical plants from a single “parent” plant! Exponentially increase the number of your lowest-maintenance and highest-yielding plants and trees using low-cost and easily accessible materials..
  • Automated irrigation systems allow you to provide the regular moisture that is needed by seedlings and cuttings while maintaining time-freedom!

You will leave this course with an understanding of the different methods of plant and tree propagation, a knowledge of how to guide healthy root structure development in seedlings and maximize the rooting potential of cuttings using low-cost, DIY air-pruning bed(s) and mist-propagation bed(s), and an overview of options for efficiently delivering water to new plants.
