The Walter H. Capps Center for the Study of Ethics, Religion, and Public Life will present “No Prophets: The Fight to Save Democracy from Christian Nationalism” with Rep. Jared Huffman on Oct. 13, 2026, at 7:00pm at UCSB’s Henley Hall 1010. This event is free and open to the public.
In his book, No Prophets: The Fight to Save Democracy from Christian Nationalism, U.S. Rep. Jared Huffman (CA-02) uses firsthand experience and extensive research to describe Christian nationalism’s goal of an authoritarian theocracy. He argues that Christian nationalism is now America’s most dangerous political movement, with leaders working at the highest levels of government. Huffman also provides a roadmap for building an interfaith coalition to save secular democracy and the freedoms it protects.

Jared Huffman is a Humanist and the only member of Congress to admit he does not believe in gods. He co-founded the Congressional Freethought Caucus to promote sound public policy based on reason, science, and moral values. He is also Ranking Member of the House Natural Resources Committee. He lives in San Rafael, CA. Huffman is an alumnus of UCSB (B.A. ’86, Poli. Sci.) and a former student of Walter Capps. This book talk will be moderated by Joseph Blankholm, Associate Professor of Religious Studies, UCSB. Copies of the book will be available for purchase by Chaucer’s Books, with an author signing following the book talk.
