Riding the Old Spanish Trail

Free movie screening with Q&A

Between 1830 and 1848, The Old Spanish Trail witnessed a brief but furious heyday as a trade route linking California and New Mexico. In 2014 and 2015, local riders Richard Waller, Otis Calef, and Jim Clark retraced this historic 1200-mile route on horseback from Los Angeles to Santa Fé, riding in the footsteps of Kit Carson and Antonio Armijo.

This 55-minute film, directed by Benedicte Schoyen, with music composed by her husband Ned Clark, follows the riders on their epic journey across the southwest, through the natural beauty of the landscape and the challenges of following the original route in modern times, https://www.oldspanishtrailfilm.com.

After the screening there will be a Q&A panel with riders Otis Calef and Jim Clark, along with filmmaker Benedicte Schøyen. As part of the evening Ned Clark also will perform a few old cowboy songs before the screening starts.

The free screening is part of the ongoing Wilderness Hiking Speaker Series hosted by the Santa Barbara Public Library. The talks are the third Thursday of the month and feature topics related to hiking, backpacking, and our local natural history.
