Rincon’s Oily History at Carp History Museum

Up next in the Carpinteria Valley Museum of History’s Talk & Talkback Speaker Series will be A Volcano, Renegade Drillers, and the Great Spill of ’69: Rincon’s Oily History, a talk by historians Stephen Bates and Vince Burns. The duo will explore Rincon’s history with oil from Chumash to “Rincon Island,” including the Rincon “volcano” and the oil spill of 1969.

“Talks with Bates and Burns are always informative, entertaining, and history-minded events. Together, Bates and Burns are the experts on all things Rincon, and they are eager to share their knowledge and learn from the audience,” noted Jayme Yahr, the museum’s director. “Bring your questions for the talkback portion of the evening!”

The 2026 Talk & Talkback Speaker Series is hosted by the Carpinteria Valley Museum of History. A Volcano, Renegade Drillers, and the Great Spill of ’69: Rincon’s Oily History will be held on Tuesday, June 30^th from 5 to 6 p.m. at the museum, 956 Maple Ave. in downtown Carpinteria. The talk is free for members of the museum and $10 per person for visitors. No rsvps required. Ticket sales at the door.
