Following last year’s momentous 30th Anniversary celebrations, the Santa Barbara Women’s Political Committee (SBWPC) brings back “Cosmopolitics.” One of SBWPC’s most popular events, Cosmopolitics is an evening of socializing and lively conversations about important political issues facing women in California and the USA.

Assembly Member Wendy Carrillo, a former journalist elected in 2017 to represent the 51st District (East Los Angeles), will give the keynote address.

Carrillo came to the United States as child, fleeing the El Salvador’s civil war with her family. She was undocumented from ages 5 to 13,; she became a citizen on her 21st birthday.  She became politically active by the time she was in high school.

For 10 years, Carrillo wrote, produced and hosted “Knowledge is Power”,  a community-based radio show reaching 1.2 million listeners, discussing wide- ranging progressive issues with elected officials, community leaders and stakeholders. Described as a “bold, unapologetic progressive”, she ran on her political core values and goals of equity, justice and opportunity.

In 2019, Carrillo received Emily List’s “Gabby Giffords Rising Star Award” for her commitment to service and progress. #MoreOfUs is Carrillo’s powerful digital platform for promoting feminist issues, as well as gender and racial equity in politics.
