SNOWBALL EARTH in the AMERICAN WEST

By Prof. Francis Macdonald, UCSB Dept. of Earth Science

Around 700 million years ago, Earth was covered in ice at least twice, from pole to equator: this is called Earth’s SNOWBALL STATE.

Prof. Macdonald will discuss this state and the Great Unconformity, or gap in our rock record and origin of animals at that time, including proposed models for glaciers and biological evolution of the period.
