Interested in getting involved in local conservation efforts? Coal Oil Point Reserve is currently looking for volunteers to assist with the Snowy Plover Docent Program. It is currently breeding season for this threatened species of shorebird, so you will have the opportunity to observe nests and chicks during your shifts. The next classroom training is on Wednesday, June 28th at 2:00 pm.

Coal Oil Point Reserve is the first place to restore a nesting site that had previously been abandoned by a threatened species of shorebird, the Western Snowy Plover. Our docents play a key role in this success by educating the public about Snowy Plovers and ensuring that the protected areas are free from trespassing and off-leash dogs.

We are looking for volunteers to spend 2 hours a week on Sands Beach, teaching visitors about the threatened status of the Western Snowy Plover. Docents also ask beachgoers to leash their dogs and avoid sensitive habitat areas. The training will focus on the ecology of Snowy Plovers, their habitat needs, and successful strategies for communicating with the public.
