It’s time for Theatre Eclectic and SBCC’s School of Extended Learning’s annual Spring Play. Building on last year’s rousing production of The Great Gatsby, we now present Shakespeare’s “happiest play”, As You Like It. This approximately 75 minute version was adapted and arranged for the stage of the Globe Theatre at The Century of Progress, Chicago (1934) by B. Iden Payne.
As always, all performances are free and open to the public with actors in their 20’s to their 70’s, consistent with Theatre Eclectic’s mission to bring together under represented artists to perform for underserved audiences.
You can see As You Like It at multiple venues near you – Tuesdays, May 13 and 20, 7:00 pm, at Wake Campus Auditorium (300 N. Turnpike); Thursdays, May 15 and 22, 7 pm, at Schott Campus Auditorium (310 W. Padre St.); and Saturday, May 17, 2:00 pm, at Friendship Manor Retirement Community (6647 El Colegio Rd., Isla Vista).
In his Director’s Notes, Philip Levien shares, “’Sweet are the uses of adversity,’ says the banished Duke Senior, as he surveys the beautiful forest where he now resides with his friends, his loyal court in exile. In AS YOU LIKE IT, the happiest of Shakespeare’s comedies, the duke’s words provide guidance and inspiration for living in today’s challenging times. We hope you enjoy the poetry and the humor as you sojourn in Shakespeare’s Forest of Arden.”
