Theatre Eclectic and SBCC’s School of Extended Learning will soon open their annual Spring Play.  This May, we present the full-length version of The Tavern, by George M. Cohan.  Originally billed in 1925 as “the greatest mystery of all time”, The Tavern is a rousing, multi-layered melodrama, full of comedy, fun, and suspense centered around a Vagabond, a mysterious woman, and the folks they encounter in a rural tavern one dark and stormy night.

As always, all performances are free and open to the public with actors in their 20’s to their 70’s, consistent with Theatre Eclectic’s mission to bring together under represented artists to perform for underserved audiences.

You can see The Tavern at multiple venues near you – Tuesdays, May 12 and 19, 7:00 pm, at Wake Campus Auditorium (300 N. Turnpike); Thursdays, May 12 and 21, 7 pm, at Schott Campus Auditorium (310 W. Padre St.); and Saturday, May 16, 2:00 pm, at Friendship Manor Retirement Community (6647 El Colegio Rd., Isla Vista).

In his Director’s Notes, Philip Levien, Theatre Eclectic Artistic Director and Acting for Older Adults Instructor, shares: “In his 1920’s play, THE TAVERN, George M. Cohan pokes fun at the melodramas of his day. In so doing, he brings laughter, while also asking some existential questions along the way. In early productions, Cohan himself played the central character of the Vagabond, who takes delight in pointing out the absurdities of life. We hope you have as much fun watching him as well as the other folks in the tavern, as we have had bringing Cohan’s work to life. Enjoy!
