This & That Performs at Roy

There’s a new trio in town, going by the name This & That—aka TnT.

When singer and cajon player Liz Barnitz got together with guitarist/sort-of singer Joe Woodard and accordionist-actual singer Brett Larsen, the goal was to create a fun-loving and stylistically free-ranging group, and to see where it could go. So far, the threesome has gone specifically to 7 West Carillo Street, home of the mighty and homie restaurant Roy. TNT’s upcoming show on Friday, October 23rd has a special sentimental aura, as probably the final appearance in this legendary space, which owner Roy Gandy is retiring from at the end of 2026. that adds up to a 35-year run for the man called Roy.

These long time Santa Barbaran musical mainstays are part of a tangled family tree: Barnitz and Larsen currently perform in Paper Moon and, for many years, Spencer the Gardener (Liz is the sister of Spencer). Woodard’s band resume includes Lucinda Lane, Headless Household, flapping Flapping, A Mother Country and etc.

With a growing songbook tapping into the musicians various bands, and then some, the process of finding a name to describe the variety of their book–pop, jazz, Latin music, originals and not-originals, other stuff sneaking into the mix–led to what may have been an obvious choice.
