Chumash Indians and Spaniards initially made the trails that crossed and traversed the Santa Monica Mountains and the Channel Islands. These trails are now part of local, state, and federal agencies, and they link the various agencies to form a recreational network from Griffith Park in Los Angeles to Pt. Mugu in Ventura County to Santa Rosa Island off the coast.
In 1969, as development started to take over the lands and erase some of the trails, many people were concerned and the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council was born to help establish and protect a public trail system connecting areas of population to the parklands and the seashore.
In this talk, learn about the history of the SMMTC and how what started off as a group of concerned equestrians became an organization that would help to rebuild many of the trails found on the Channel Islands and the mainland, including Cherry Canyon, Lobo Canyon, Torrey Pines and the 68-mile regional Backbone Trail in Santa Monica.
