Lotte Lehmann Concert (UCSB)
The UCSB Chamber Orchestra will present a Winter Concert featuring the music of Beethoven and Brahms, on Monday, March 10 at 7:30 pm. This concert, directed by Andy Radford, will include the Egmont Overture of Beethoven, and the Serenade No. 1 of Brahms. The Beethoven Overture was written as part of incidental music for Goethe’s play, Egmont. Beethoven composed the music without accepting payment, and “merely for the love of the poet”. Much of the overture illustrates the musical contrast between brutal force and imploring lament.
Originally written for nine musicians, Brahms expanded the Serenade No. 1 into a glorious symphonic piece. This six-movement piece showcases all of the instruments and served the purpose of helping Brahms develop his orchestral voice and compositional style. The music is heroic, dance-like and lyrical.
