Teens and adults are invited to become OG Readers Volunteer Tutors as part of the library’s reading intervention program for kids! This program comprises the first hour of an 8-hour virtual training based on the Orton-Gillingham Approach of teaching kids who are struggling readers.
These techniques employ multi-sensory learning, phonics-based instruction, and other tools to demystify the process of reading. Links to videos and activities to complete the remaining 7 hours of training at your own pace will be provided.
Once training is complete, volunteers will work one-on one with students in 1st – 4th grades. Volunteers and their students will meet at least once a week virtually or, if possible, at the library during out-of-school hours. Parents and caregivers are also welcome to attend and participate in the virtual training without becoming library volunteers.
Volunteers should:
  • Enjoy working with young people and exhibit patience
  • Be 16 years or older by the time of their first session, and if over 18, complete a background check
  • Commit to the training sessions and at least one hour of tutoring per week for 6 months
  • Be excited to share a passion for reading!
Everyone on the waiting list will also receive a link to the Zoom meeting. This link will be sent one day prior to the training.
