Old Mission Santa Barbara presents Virtue and Virtuosity: Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel, a lecture by Dr. Lisa DeBoer.

Dr. DeBoer’s lecture will explore:

  • Michelangelo’s centrality in the history of art
  • the Sistine Chapel as both a pivotal point Michelangelo’s career and an obstacle plotted by jealous rivals
  • iconography of the Sistine Chapel and The Last Judgement
  • remnants of the process used to create the ceiling frescos
  • Michelangelo’s “hidden” self-portrait

Dr. Lisa DeBoer teaches the History of Art at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California. Her areas of interest include early modern print culture and the uses of the visual arts in Christian worship. She is the author of The Visual Arts in the Worshiping Church (Eerdmans, 2016), which won the 2016 Lilly Fellows Program Arlin G. Meyer Prize.
