Weaving Posters from Past to Present: UCSB Reads 2024 Drop-In Art Workshop at UCSB Library

UCSB Library invites you to join a drop-in art activity any time between 11:00am and 7:00pm.  Please note, there will be a break from 4:00-5:00pm so participants can attend Kim Yasuda’s Pacific Views: Library Speaker Series talk “Public Art and Campus Placemaking:  Recentering the Artist in Communities of Practice.”

Visiting artist Elena Yu will lead this activity, which is presented in conjunction with the UCSB Reads 2024 book Your Brain on Art by Susan Magsamen and Ivy Ross.  Participants will work with paper strips to create collaborative woven collages. The imagery on the strips is sourced from historic posters in the Library’s California Ethnic & Multicultural Archives (CEMA). Additional, contemporary imagery, will be drawn from flyers and posters created by current UCSB student organizations.

The archival imagery will highlight important arts-based activism in California that emerged alongside the early histories of Ethnic Studies programs in California and at UCSB in the late 1960’s-1980s

The UCSB Arts Equity Commons Campus Artist in Residence is sponsored by a grant from the University of California Advancing Faculty Diversity Program.

Event is free and open to the public.
