Even after a two-year battle with a life-threatening illness-which he bravely conquered-the man still makes better music than just about anyone else. When Carrie Rodriguez last visited town, she took to the Lobero Theatre stage with the immortal Chip Taylor. Having only touted her wares as a fiddle player for a short period of time, it was on a cramped stage in an Austin record store back in 2001 when Taylor and Rodriguez first crossed paths.
Twilight Tours
As summer draws to a close and the days begin to get shorter, there’s no better time to enjoy a sunset stroll-and there’s no better place to do it than the grounds of Ganna Walska Lotusland. For a production that ran through three directors, The Invasion really isn’t so bad. It’s almost saved by the bastion of bad movies, Nicole Kidman, who’s somehow dignified and sexy even when the films she graces ( The Human Stain, Eyes Wide Shut , and Batman Forever ) have four legs and bark boldly at the mail delivery person.
From Markets to Midnights, Eating Up the Hungry Cat
At 8:30 on Saturday morning, the three chefs and general manager of the Hungry Cat drift into the small restaurant on the corner of Anapamu and Chapala streets and brew some coffee, pouring it hot and strong into clear pint glasses and using it to chase the chunks of bright orange Charlene melon they pass around. The restaurant won’t open until 5 p.m., but today is Farmers Market day, and in a few minutes the team will pile into Chef Dylan Fultineer’s Subaru station wagon with a hand truck and drive the 10 or so blocks to what is clearly their idea of heaven-the Santa Barbara Farmers Market.

During the past four years, the husband-and-wife ensemble of Nick and Anna Montoya have not only refined their sound, but also firmly established themselves within the swirling world of synthesized music.
