Timetable of Old Spanish Days

1782: King Carlos wished to establish a fortress to protect the new colony from foreign aggression. A wooden cross is raised on the site of the future Presidio de Santa Barbara (near present-day intersection of Canon Perdido and Santa Barbara streets) and blessed by Padre Junipero Serra. Lt. Jose Maria Ortega, first comandante, erects stockade to house the families of 36 soldiers, 70 officers, and nine Chumash Indians. Presidio will be the last of four built in New Spain (the others are in San Diego, Monterey, and San Francisco).

• Foster grandparents are needed for 15 hours per week to assist in Santa Barbara, Ventura, and San Luis Obispo counties’ schools. Participating volunteers must be at least 60 years old, qualify as low-income residents, and have a passion for serving the community. Benefits include a tax-exempt stipend, one meal per day while on duty, travel reimbursement, an annual health appraisal, and monthly in-service meetings. Call 884-7226.

Police Chief Cam Sanchez Explains the Law’s View on Gangs

S.B. Police Department Chief Cam Sanchez was raised in East Los Angeles and has been in police work for 27 years, the last seven of those in Santa Barbara. He has strong feelings about gangs and quite a bit of insight into that lifestyle. Sanchez consented to sit down and talk with Martha Sadler for the better part of an hour about gangs in Santa Barbara. What follows is an edited transcript of that conversation.
