Some books are without precedent; Jeffrey Eugenides’s Middlesex is one of those books. Published in 2002, nine years after his debut novel The Virgin Suicides was released, Middlesex is narrated by Cal Stephanides, a hermaphrodite of Greek descent who is raised as a girl in Grosse Point, Michigan, before undergoing surgery in puberty and living his adult life as a man.

At The Indy, the bulk of making things pretty is handled by our staff photographer Paul Wellman (center), whom you might find shooting portraits in the morning, covering court trials in the afternoon, riding his bike to shoot breaking news around sunset, and then scrambling in front of the Bowl’s stage to snap the latest pop superstar. And in 2007, Wellman had plenty of help, both from the dependable David Bazemore (right), who’s covered cultural events around Santa Barbara for years, and from backcountry legend Ray Ford (left), who joined the paper this year as our outdoors editor and caught many scenes from the Zaca Fire with his camera.

Santa Barbara’s Reigning Film Fanatic Runs Down His Top 10 Films of 2007
This past year was a banner year for film, so coming up with the best 10 is a difficult exercise. I started with a list of 25, and had to simmer that down substantially, eventually cutting out some favorites along the way. So before we get to my top 10, here are some movies worth mentioning:
