Katherine Bond Griffin
Our dearly loved mother, Katherine Bond Griffin passed away peacefully at home on August 15th, 2008.
Katherine was born May 2nd 1916 in Peru, IL, to Frances and Neil Bond. She attended Northwestern University where she graduated in 1938 with a degree in Psychology.
Katherine married Phillip S. Griffin August 29th 1940 in Evanston, IL. She is survived by her eight children: Sheila Burkhardt, MaryAnn Griffin, Kathleen Sampson, Pati Griffin, Thomas Griffin, James Griffin, Gerard Griffin and Maggie Griffin. And eleven grandchildren: William Burkhardt, Sathya Osterhaus, Eron Osterhaus, Ananda Osterhaus, Jonathan Jai Osterhaus, Molly Sampson, Shenandoah Sampson, Kati Reece, James Griffin, Grace Griffin, and Ruby Griffin.
Katherine and Phillip Griffin moved to Santa Barbara in 1973 where Katherine enjoyed tennis, cycling and walking their dogs on the beach. She became a member of the Unitarian Society of Santa Barbara and found a community of like-minded free thinkers. Mom loved all the Arts and was a devoted docent at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art for twenty years. She also loved the theatre in all its forms particularly Shakespeare and spent many summers at the Shakespearean Festival in Ashland, OR.
An avid student, Katherine continued her education through Adult Ed classes until quite recently. Her poetry classes with David Richo were a highlight of her later years. Katherine enjoyed yoga and Tai Ji well into her eighties and was a student of Master Tai Ji Teacher Chungliang Al Huang. She always looked forward to attending his annual workshops at Morro Bay.
Due to her Glaucoma and diminishing eyesight, Katherine became a member of the Braille Institute. There she took cooking, art and independent living classes. Our mother was an incredible cook and baker. She loved the holidays, baking cookies and hosting our family festivities.
A beautiful woman with an indomitable spirit, our mother was a unique individual who will be greatly missed and eternally loved by those she left behind. Until we meet again Mom:
