Ferdinand Michael Domingue passed away peacefully from cancer at home on June 30, 2010, at the age of 61. Ferd graduated from Loyola High School, then attended UCSB and Cal State Los Angeles, earning B.S. and M.S. degrees in Psychology. He received post-graduate training in the field of electronics.

Ferd worked for 26 years at SBRS/Raytheon’s Santa Barbara facility, where he was referred to by his colleagues as an MVP. While at Raytheon, Ferd was instrumental in the design, testing, and assembly of the optical components of remote sensing satellites and contributed his optical expertise to the LandSat, MODIS, JAMI, and VIIRS programs. Following his retirement, he was a regular volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and Direct Relief International.

Soft spoken, yet confident, Ferd was always good natured and approachable. Described as ‘the best brother in law there ever was’, Ferd’s combination of a dry sense of humor, sharp wit, intellectual curiosity and compassion was highly valued by his family, friends and colleagues. He had a love of jazz. He described events, his travels and even home repairs with a sense of wonder and amazement. He welcomed challenges from whatever source as if they were his good friends. He had a passion for making things work and was generous, compassionate and unconditional in helping others do the same, be they friends or strangers.

He is survived by his wife Joanie, sisters Jewel Gonzales, Lolita Domingue Walker, and Celia Domingue Pettus, brother, Milton Hopkins, sister-in law, Patricia Beattie, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers please consider donations to his favorite organizations: Direct Relief International, 27 S. La Patera Lane, Goleta, CA 93117, Habitat for Humanity of So. S.B. County, P.O. Box 172, Goleta, CA 93116, Land Trust for Santa Barbara County, P.O Box 91830, Santa Barbara, CA 93130. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 31, 2010 at Skofield Park in Santa Barbara.
