Alyce Jane Moulds Pierce
February 3, 1922 – December 18, 2010
Alyce Jane Moulds Pierce passed away peacefully after a stroke in Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital on Saturday December 18, 2010. Born February 3, 1922 in Riverside, Alyce and her parents, Ruby Alice Wahl and Oliver Lloyd Moulds, moved to Fillmore and eventually to Santa Barbara while she was still a baby. Alyce attended Franklin and Harding Elementary Schools, La Cumbre and Santa Barbara Junior High Schools and graduated from Santa Barbara High School in the class of 1940. After studying architecture at University of California Berkeley, Alyce returned home, and on January 16, 1944, married John (Jack) Wescott Pierce, a third generation Santa Barbara native, at Santa Barbara 1st Christian Church. They were together for 55 years until Jack passed in 1999. During World War II the couple resided in Hollywood California.
After the war they returned to Santa Barbara and eventually moved to Ontario and Upland, California. While living in Upland, Alyce studied archeology at UC Riverside where she graduated in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science degree. Upon Jack’s retirement the couple returned to Santa Barbara where they resided until their passing. Alyce was an active volunteer at the Museum of Natural History, Botanic Garden and Genealogy Society library. Alyce is survived by her children Kenneth Pierce, Rick Pierce, his wife, Jennifer, Sally Pierce, her husband, Dr. Peter Avery, her grandchildren, James, Rebecca and Rachel Pierce, Keith and Fiona Avery, her brother Tom Moulds and her sister, Sue Moulds Cramer, her 1st cousin Janet Wahl Pauly, and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Alyce to the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, or Santa Barbara Botanic Garden.
