Marguerite “Meg” Birch Torbert
09/30/1912 – 09/23/2011
Meg was a woman of many talents—an art professor, design consultant, and a curator at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, where she also edited Design Quarterly. She consulted for the Museum of Contemporary Crafts in NYC, and later designed interiors for the International Design Center.
In 1978 she retired to Santa Barbara and began painting after a hiatus of 30 years. She soon exhibited her work locally at Elizabeth Fortner Gallery and later at Marcia Burtt Studio, creating hundreds of paintings in three decades.
She is survived by her daughter, Stephanie Torbert of Minneapolis, six nieces and nephews, grandnieces and nephews, and many loyal friends.
A memorial gathering will take place at Marcia Burtt studio 517 Laguna St. in Santa Barbara, Sunday, January 22 at 2:00pm. Memorials may be given to Hospice of Santa Barbara.
