Monteith G. Heaton, “Monte,” passed away unexpectedly on May 4th, 2012 from an apparent heart attack while he was returning to his office after playing basketball in Goleta.

Monte was born on March 9, 1952 to Scott and Audre Heaton in Rockville Center, New York. He has two older siblings, sister Rande, in NY and brother Scott Jr., in Stockton, CA. He was a proud “Gator” at the University of Florida for three years. He earned a BS in Chemistry and an MS in Marine Chemistry from State University, Stony Brook, NY, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1978.

An Oxnard resident for over 20 years, Monte made his name as a marketing whiz for tech firms including Dynamic Solutions/Waters/Millipore, Digital Instruments, Innovative Micro Technology (IMT) and most recently, Goleta’s Asylum Research, the technology leader in atomic force and scanning probe microscopy. As EVP of Marketing and Business Management at Asylum, Monte combined his scientific and technological expertise with his immense talents for sales and writing to stellar effect. In work and in life, he gave his all in everything he did. Monte was well known for his loving spirit, infectious sense of humor, and enthusiasm for life. Always active and youthful, he loved surfing, playing basketball and soccer, going to movies and classic rock concerts, and spending time with his family and his dog Ari.

A proud and devoted family man, Monte would truly do anything and everything for his wife of 32 years, Nelsine, and his two children. He was a kind, supportive and nurturing presence in the lives of daughter Ashley, who follows in Monte’s footsteps as a writer, and son, Monte Jr., who graduates from UCSB with a double BA in Finance and Psychology this year.

Monte’s ashes were paddled out to sea at his favorite surfing spot. A celebration of his life will be held sometime in July. The date and time will be posted on his tribute page at Donations in Monte’s name may be sent to “Operation Hearts and Home” in Long Island
