David Miles Prowell, Jr.
David Prowell, 90, passed away in his sleep on July 31 at Santa Barbara Convalescent Hospital.
Born in New Orleans, Louisiana to David Miles Prowell, Sr. and Ellen Manning, he was preceded in death by his parents and his three sisters Ellen, Lucy and Eola. He is survived by his son Grover Prowell, daughters Susan Braden (Dexter), Sherie Corley (John), Laura Rodman (Bryan) and four grandchildren: Dustin and Chris Braden, and Megan and Julia Rodman.
After graduating from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge in 1942, David served during WWII in the Naval Air Corps. Following his war service, he moved to California, married, and attended U.C. Berkeley graduate school to study Agricultural Economics. Employment followed with the California Farm Bureau Supply Company in Santa Rosa and Atwater. After purchasing an almond ranch in Atwater, he later started an irrigation supply business and became a bee broker to furnish bees for pollination. At an age when most people retire, he moved to Goleta where he resided for many years at Encina Royale and developed a new career as a successful real estate broker. A dedicated volunteer, storyteller and gentleman, he will be remembered as a dear father, a good friend and a caring and unique individual.
The family would especially like to thank the dedicated staff and hardworking caregivers at Hospice of Santa Barbara, Visiting Nurse and Hospice Care, Villa Riviera, and the Santa Barbara Convalescent Hospital for making his last years more comfortable and dignified. The congregation at Live Oak Unitarian Church was also a wonderful caring extended family to him. Contributions may be made in his memory to any one of these wonderful organizations. A memorial service will be held on August 11 at 2 PM at Live Oak Unitarian Church at 820 N. Fairview Avenue in Goleta. Please come with a memory to share. ¡Viva la Vida, Dad!
