Susan was born the oldest of four children to aviation pioneers John and Nancy Russell. She was born in San Francisco, California on October 15, 1948. She traveled the world as a young child living in Asmara Eritrea, Africa; Beirut, Lebanon; and Honolulu, Hawaii before moving back to the Bay Area with her family where she spent her childhood in the small town of Diablo.

They first moved to Santa Barbara in the late 1960’s and she knew from the first moment she arrived that she belonged in the stunning town of Santa Barbara forever.
