Margaret Jane Winstrom (Learned) passed away on December 15th at the age of 92. Born at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital April 29th, 1924 to Judge Weston Learned and Gertrude Loynachan earned, Margaret grew up in Santa Barbara attending Harding Elementary, La Cumbre Junior High and Santa Barbara High School where she graduated one month before the attack on Pearl Harbor. After high school, she continued her education taking 13th year business classes and worked as a steno/bookkeeper during WWII, while her high school sweetheart Jack Winstrom was away in the Navy defending our Country on a Destroyer. After the war they married in January 1946 at The Santa Barbara First Presbyterian Church After 53 years of marriage jack passed away in 1999.

Jack and Margaret lived in Los Angeles while Jack attended UCLA. Upon his graduation they settled in Goleta. Over the years Margaret was active in many organizations such as the Goleta Lions Club, Goleta Amvets, and was a founding member of the Goleta Presbyterian Church. She volunteered in her grandchildren’s classrooms over 13 years, was a Bible Study fellowship leader, a Goleta 4H leader, and worked as a bookkeeper for Goleta Electric and Winstrom & Associates.

Margaret and Jack loved to play golf and tennis and were members of the Alisal Golf Club and the Los Fiesteros Dance Club. Margaret was an avid bridge player and participated in recording for the Blind Marathon Bridge for many years. One of her favorite activities was meeting with her “walking group” every Monday. This group of six friends had many interesting adventures around the local communities.

Margaret is survived by her brother, Andrew Learned, daughter Jill Lanes, son Bruce, and seven grandchildren: Andrew Lanes, Holly Rose, Katie White, Valerie Steve;Tracie Winstrom, Jack Rose, and Samantha Winstrom, and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Jack, daughter Cynthia Rose Brother Chris Learned, and Sisters Ann Herrigstag and Gail Beck. Margaret will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and loyal and faithful friend with a witty sense of humor, generous spirit and firm faith.

The Winstrom Family would like to give special thanks to Margaret’s caregivers Delfidia Estrada and Kathy Rosales, whose care gave untold comfort to her and our family for almost two years. You two are angels, and we are eternally grateful for your care, support, guidance and love.

A memorial service will be held on Jan. 28, 2017 at 10:30 AM at the Goleta Presbyterian Church, 6067 Shirrell Way, Goleta, CA. 93117. In lieu of flowers, donations in her honor can be made to The Goleta Presbyterian Church and/or Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care, 512 East Gutierrez St., Santa Barbara, CA. 93103.
