Steven “Steve” Bruce Holmstrom
Steve Holmstrom of “Cowboystar Guitars” reunited with his beloved wife, Gail, on July 17, 2018.
Steve was an important member of the Santa Barbara music community (and world) because of his vast musical knowledge and resources. His shop was located in what is now the “Funk Zone” and was THE place to go to for hard to find musical equipment, invaluable advice and a good laugh! Steve was also an antique rug expert and artist.
Steve was born in Minnesota to Bruce and Gloria Holmstrom. He was a brother to Scott, Mike, Mark and Bryan Holmstrom.
In 1965 Steve moved to California where he met the love of his life, Gail. Steve and Gail met in Santa Monica and later relocated to La Conchita. There they raised their two children, Christopher “Chris” and Jennifer “Jenny May” Holmstrom. Gail predeceased Steve on January 13, 2010.
Since the closing of “Cowboystar Guitars” and Gail’s passing, Steve continued to reside in La Conchita and spent a lot of time in Carpinteria creating wonderful memories with his three grandchildren Emma, Nathan and Travis. He also continued his hunt for rare musical items.
Since his passing, many locals and musicians have reached out to Steve’s family with stories of his kindness, generosity and patience and have expressed sadness over the loss of his friendship.
Steven Bruce Holmstrom will also be remembered for his sense of humor. He had a quick dry wit with brilliance. He loved the absurdity of life. At his shop Cowboystar Guitars he was about the experience and not making the buck. His low pressure sales technique included, “You don’t want to buy that Lou.” Even if Steve knew your name you were called Bob’ or ‘Lou’.
A celebration of his life will take place on August 25, 2018, in the Mackenzie Park Center in Santa Barbara from 12:00PM to 3:30 PM.
