City of Death

Ft. Myers

Santa Barbara native and retired teacher, Robert A. Young, Jr., passed away on Sunday, January 16, 2022 in Ft. Myers, Florida at the age of 86. Bob attended Santa Barbara High School and graduated from UCSB, while also serving in the Navy, the Coastguard and the “Hotshots”, a team of smoke jumpers with the UDSA.

An avid lover of music, Bob played the piano, the drums and later in life, took up the tuba where he performed with the 55 Plus Prime Time Dream Band, Tuba Christmas, and was a regular on the flatbed playing patriotic music down State Street at the 4th of July Parade. He enjoyed cycling and participated in numerous rides up and down the California coast.

Bob enjoyed making candy at Christmas every year for his friends and family. His grandfather’s recipe for penuche was always looked forward to and if you were lucky, you’d also get one of those little white boxes of peanut clusters. He gave his time freely, volunteering every year as a poll worker, at Goleta Valley Junior High, the Goleta Valley Library and the First Church of Christ Scientists, where he attended for most of his life.

He is survived by his daughter, Courtney (Young) Fraser and her husband, James E. Fraser; his son, Grayson Young and his wife Alexandra Roedel-Young; and his grandson, James H. Fraser. A Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held at Tucker’s Grove on Sunday, February 27th at 2 o’clock in the afternoon. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Santa Barbara High School Band Boosters Corp in honor of Robert A. Young, Jr. Class of 1951. A GoFundMe account has been set up at https://gofund.me/54cfeb84
