Eric passed away on July 27, 2021 at Holmes Regional Hospital in Melbourne, Fl from Covid complications with his wife and children at his side.

Eric was born in Oakland, CA to Gloria and Edgar Flavell on November 25, 1953. He grew up in Palo Alto and graduated from Cubberly High School in 1972. He attended Oregon State University graduating in 1978 with degrees in Civil and Industrial Engineering. Upon graduation, he married his college sweetheart, Betty Lathrop, and they have enjoyed 43 years together.

His first job after college with John Carrollo Engineers would provide him with valuable experience in water/waste water design and inspection. Six years later he would join Flowers and Associates in Santa Barbara, CA to build a public works unit serving multiple municipalities and agencies in the tri-county area. After 30 years he and Betty decided to follow their children to Florida where he was hired by Bowman Consulting in Melbourne to start another public works division while also acting as the city engineer for West Melbourne. His work at Bowman allowed him to mentor many bright young engineers which he saw as a chance to give back for all he had been fortunate enough to learn over the years. He truly enjoyed that role and said that he fed off of their energy.

An avid surfer, diver and water polo player, Eric was never far from the ocean or a pool. He and Betty crewed together in sailboat races for over 20 years in Santa Barbara. He enjoyed traveling, hunting, boating and was a lifetime member of the Santa Barbara Blues Society. He held a membership in ASCE for over 45 years becoming a Fellow being on local and national committees and a president of the Santa Barbara area chapter.

Eric is survived by his wife, Betty, daughter, Heather, son Nolan, granddaughters Kaylee and Maddie, sister Vicki, and brother Geoffrey.

His family invites friends to a celebration of life on Apr. 16 at 2pm at Ledbetter Beach followed by a paddle out.
