Charline Marie Shook
It is with great sadness we lost Charline Marie Shook on March 1, 2024. Charline was born to Charles and Hazel Allen in Alhambra, California on June 8, 1928. She was an only child but considered her cousin, Shannon Hamilton, her brother. They were lucky to grow up living next door to each other and going to school together.
Charline, known as “Chuck” in high school, married her high school sweetheart and often talked about graduating from high school, marrying our father Floyd Maurice Shook, Jr., “Maurie”, and turning 18 in the same week. While in Korea ‘Maurie’ wrote to Charline and said “buy a house in Santa Barbara”. She bought a house in San Roque near her parents and made Santa Barbara her home where she and Maurie raised their two daughters, Wendy and Terri.
Charline and Maurie bought their first airplane, a Piper Cub, when Maurie used his GI Bill to obtain his pilot’s license. They spent many years flying to Mexico and Baja California. Charline was a founding member of Aeromedicos and served as flight coordinator for many years. Like many successful marriages Charline and Maurie had hobbies in common. Charline learned to fly and was always very proud of earning her pilot’s license. She also took up photography and she and Maurie traveled the Pacific Northwest, the Southwest and Europe first taking black and whites, then taking color photos. Some of their work can be seen on display at 705 Anacapa Street. When they became too old to fly they took up RV traveling and each year they would spend three months on the road taking photos in our National Parks.
Charline played tennis, a passion she passed along to her family. She was a member of the Assistance League and loved her friends and working in the shop. She was also a proud PEO member.
Charline was predeceased by her husband of more than 75 years, Maurie Shook, on August 5, 2021. She is survived by her two daughters, Wendy Edmunds and Terri Paige (Chuck) and her grandchildren Tara Penke (Jaime), Ashley Eberz (Sean), Nick Paige (Jessica), Brittany Murphy (Brian) and eleven great children.
A joint celebration of life will be held this summer.
