Wade Volk
In memory of Wade Volk
We mourn the loss of Wade Volk, a beloved advocate for Santa Barbara’s unhoused community and a cherished member of the Showers of Blessing team. For seven years, Wade served as Operations Manager, greeting guests at shower sites with his signature booming voice and warm presence. He knew people by name, remembered their stories, and was often just as popular with their dogs as with the guests themselves.
Wade’s journey with Showers of Blessing began as a guest. He quickly emerged as a dedicated volunteer, and his talents soon earned him a formal role on the staff. With a background in the culinary arts, Wade brought creativity and heart to every endeavor. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when traditional Thanksgiving dinners were canceled, he rallied local restaurant owners and volunteers in just a few days to host a full-day celebration at the Unitarian Society. Over 100 guests shared a turkey feast and watched football together on a big screen—a moment of joy and connection in a difficult time. For the last several years Wade organized a beautiful thank you event each spring for the volunteers of the Showers of Blessing.
Wade had a gift for words, often sharing handwritten, calligraphed messages of encouragement and gratitude with volunteers, guests, and board members alike. He also served as a public spokesperson for Showers of Blessing, speaking at churches and civic groups throughout Santa Barbara. He took pride in the program’s growth—from serving 450 guests per month in 2020 to over 630 monthly in 2025.
Wade’s life and contributions have been honored at memorial events at St. Athanasius Orthodox Church and during a Volunteer Appreciation gathering. His legacy lives on in the community he helped nurture and uplift.
