Catherine Ann Callahan

1950-2026

Catherine Ann Callahan passed away in her home in Santa Barbara after 75 years full of life and love. She is deeply missed by her family and her community of friends. Catherine described herself as an elder, a mother, a grandmother, a musician in the symphony of life, and in the end a person with strongly held ideas and an insatiable curiosity about life in its many forms.

Born in 1950 to Bob and Betsy Callahan in Madison, WI, Catherine was the elder of two daughters. Catherine’s early years were nomadic, with her family living in five different cities across the Midwest before she graduated from Iowa City High School in 1967.

After high school, Catherine enrolled at the University of Wisconsin–Madison where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology and an Independent Master of Science degree. In 1972, Catherine married John Dudley; they were married for 14 years and together had two sons, Mike and Chris. They first put down roots in Santa Fe, NM, where Catherine began her career in environmental consulting, before making their way to Santa Barbara in 1980. It was there where Catherine spent the rest of her life, retiring from a career with the County of Santa Barbara.

Catherine’s guiding principles were to learn, grow, and be of service. She lived these values, never shying away from learning new things and helping others. Catherine experienced health struggles for most of her adult life, but she managed to turn these into an opportunity to give back by providing healthcare advocacy services to countless people in her community. She was a self-described “techie boomer” and she spent many hours building and refining the online presence for her healthcare advocacy business, iCare Healthcare.

Catherine’s interests were varied and deep. She was a loving and devoted mother to her two sons, and she cherished her role as grandmother to her three granddaughters, Audrey, Eleanor, and Isla. She developed a love for music in elementary school, a passion that served her for her whole life. She played music, including gamba and piano, and sang in choirs – most recently as a member of the choir at the Unitarian Society of Santa Barbara. She could frequently be found listening and dancing to a wide variety of music on her headphones, from 16th-century masses to modern hip hop. Catherine was also a lover of the outdoors, a social activist, a feminist, a dog mom and a dedicated friend. Her life was a rich tapestry of people and experiences, and she lived in gratitude.

Catherine is preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her loving sister, two sons, two daughters-in-law, and three granddaughters.
