Robert Landheer
1948-2026
Robert Landheer, a lifelong advocate for justice and human rights, passed away on April 17 in Ojai, California.
A lawyer by trade, but more fundamentally, Robert was a man who believed that every person deserved to be seen, heard, and defended.
Robert stood alongside those working for change, as a tireless advocate for the homeless and workers’ rights.
Shortly after earning his law degree, Robert moved to Santa Barbara in 1983. Whether in private practice, or with the Public Defender’s Office, Robert spent decades defending clients, always guided by persistence, humility, and a profound sense of fairness.
At the center of Robert’s world was his family. Robert especially loved spending time traveling, camping, hiking, playing chess, reading, attending Oakland Raiders games, and relaxing at the beach with loved ones.
Those who knew Robert valued his wit, intellectual rigor, and his curiosity about the wider world. He was an avid traveler, concert-goer, reader of philosophy and politics, and a generous listener. He was often found with a harmonica in hand, sharing music with friends, and quoting Bob Dylan.
Robert’s legacy endures in the many lives he touched and the justice he fought so hard to secure. Robert is survived by his family and dear friends, who will remember him always.
