Gertrude Hackman

1932-2025

Gertrude Hackman passed away peacefully on July 18, 2025 at the age of 93 after a short illness. A 4’9″ powerhouse in hot pink, she was a radiant force of nature. Born in Savannah, GA to immigrant parents, Gert taught special education before moving to Santa Barbara 52 years ago. She continued in that field as a substitute teacher for more than 20 years. A master nurturer of succulents, orchids and fruit trees, she loved her coastal sanctuary. Gert also loved classical music, especially Rachmaninoff and Chopin. Known as “Gertie” at the beach, she enjoyed her independence. Her empathy knew no bounds. Guided by the immigrant work ethic and generosity of her father, who started a credit union to help others, Gert lived a life of action. She famously opened her home to those in need, believing that status mattered far less than character.

A loving matriarch to children Ellen Hackman (Andrew), Holly Flesh (George), and Mark Hackman; grandkids Joseph, Jacob, Hanna (Yotam), Sara (Bernd), Lucian (Margalit) and Philippa (Zachary); great-grandkids Hadar, Noam and Shalev; nieces Barbara Hoffman (Paul), Sally Charnovitz, Diane Cummings and great nieces. A legacy of optimism, deep kindness, tzedaka, and “healthy advice.” Burial with family in Savannah, Georgia. She will be missed by all.
