Brian Darnell Pearcy lived a life shaped by music, resilience, and a hard won sense of clarity about what mattered most. Born at Landstuhl Army Hospital in Germany to James Pearcy and Alberta Schmadel Pearcy, he was the second son and youngest of three children. The family moved to Santa Maria in 1958 and later to Goleta in 1964, where Brian’s lifelong connection to the Central Coast took root.

From an early age, Brian was a phenomenal trumpet player — gifted, driven, and happiest when he was making music. His passion for the horn often eclipsed his interest in the classroom. Rather than spend his senior year confined to traditional coursework at Dos Pueblos High School, he chose a path that kept him closer to the band rooms where he felt most alive. Brian left school early and continued his education at Cabrillo College in Aptos, the University of Southern California, and ultimately Cal State Northridge, all known for their exceptional jazz programs.

Brian’s professional career carried him around the world. He began touring with Holiday on Ice before stepping into the role of lead trumpet for the legendary Harry James Orchestra. He later held the same position with Ray Charles, bringing his powerful sound and unmistakable musical voice to audiences across the country and beyond. Though he excelled on the road, Brian eventually chose to return to the Central Coast, where he lived the remainder of his life in Goleta and Orcutt.
A defining chapter of Brian’s life came through his long involvement with Alcoholics Anonymous. He credited the program — and the people he met through it — with helping him turn his life around. The fellowship, discipline, and honesty he found there shaped his later years, grounding him and giving him a renewed sense of purpose and connection.

Brian is survived by his dog, Sammie, his good friends, Jeff and Nan Elliott, and Linda Dews, his sister, Carole Lail, and his brother, Michael Pearcy, along with many nieces, nephews, and their children. He also leaves behind countless friends and fellow musicians in both Santa Barbara and Santa Maria — people who knew him not only for his extraordinary talent, but for his humor, his stubborn streak, and the unmistakable spark he carried with him.
