“Norm” was born in Santa Barbara on 11/23/40 and passed away peacefully in his hometown on 5/5/26. He was the son of Manuel Chavez, Sr., and was raised by his mother, Kathleen Ruiz, and her husband, Everett Ruiz. Norm was a devoted father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and friend whose warmth touched countless lives. He is survived by his children, siblings, and grandchildren.

A lifelong Santa Barbaran, Norm attended Dolores School, Catholic High School, and graduated from Santa Barbara High School. He served in the United States Marine Corps before spending more than 40 years as a plasterer, taking pride in hard work, reliability, and always showing up for others.

Norm celebrated 38 years of sobriety on 11/3/25 and was a devoted friend of Bill W. He loved coffee, sweet treats, sports, and was known as a local celebrity at Denny’s. A faithful parishioner of Our Lady of Sorrows Church, he built lasting friendships everywhere he went.

Norm will be remembered for his kindness, humility, humor, and quiet strength. His absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him.

A celebration of life will be held Friday, June 26 at 10:00am at Our Lady of Sorrows Church.
