Michael “Mike” Mocny
Michael “Mike” Mocny, 70, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, died Thursday, September 03. He loved God first, and those who knew him best came to know God better through him.
For forty years in Santa Barbara, California, Mike was a devoted physical therapist who helped thousands, giving himself faithfully to the patient work of healing. He rode with the Santa Barbara Trail Riders, hiked the local trails, creeks, and rivers, camped in the Sequoias and the wilderness, and sailed to the Channel Islands.
He kept a promise to his dying father by staying to care for his mother, visiting her nearly daily for thirty years, helping her around the house and getting her to Mass so that she could live an active and dignified life well into her mid-nineties. Mike’s faith was deepened over many years by his Franciscan friend, Brother Joachim Andrew Grant, OFM, and together they mentored many young men at Los Prietos Boys Camp in the Santa Ynez Valley.
In the last seven years of his life, Mike fulfilled a childhood dream by moving to North Idaho, where he and Monica were warmly welcomed by the Saint Thomas community in Coeur d’Alene. He served as a Knights of Columbus field agent for the last three years. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, and parishioner.
Mike is survived by his wife, Monica; his children, Anthony (Nikki) and Peri; his grandchildren, Marie, Joseph, Theodore, Madeline, and Peter; and his siblings, James, Laurel Ann Renaud, Patrice Onheiber, Christopher, and Robert.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alphonse (1988) and Marie (2018).
