Bob No»l Announces Charter School Funding

A month after winning reelection to the Santa Barbara School Board, Bob No»l took the first step toward delivering on his main campaign promise at Tuesday’s board meeting-and it turned out the reality of his campaign was far from what the other boardmembers had expected. Completely surprising his collegues, No»l proudly announced he had recently received some $405,000 in startup grant money from the state to pursue his goal of opening a charter school for grades 7-12 in the Santa Barbara School District. But the year ahead promises more than a few challenges if No»l is to realize his dream.

Third Time’s the Charm

Veronica Meadows Approved

For developer Mark Lee, visits to the City Council chambers have been occasions for genuine dread. During his first visit, councilmembers pointedly told Lee to drastically redesign his controversial housing plans, proposed for the Las Positas Valley alongside Arroyo Burro Creek. The second time, the same councilmembers told Lee they liked his original plans for Veronica Meadows better. But this Tuesday, they gave Lee the five-vote supermajority he needed not only to annex his property into city limits, but to build 25 new houses.

Deck the Office Halls

A strange thing happened this morning when I ambled into the office kitchen for my first (okay, fourth) caffeine fix of the day: I noticed a rather large, definitely prominently displayed, sprig of mistletoe dangling from the doorjamb. I stopped for a moment, gazed at the foliage-hanging there so innocently, blissfully unaware of the drama that might take place at its bequest-and wondered. Encouraging coworkers to engage in a workplace smooch: wildly inappropriate or harmless yuletide fun?

Scott Doss Creates from the Beach-Literally

Scott B. Doss works down at the beach. Likely, you’ve seen him toiling away in the sand-and likely you were impressed. Doss is the famous “Sandman,” the guy who has been creating life-sized human figures at Stearns Wharf for years. As a dedicated creator and entertainer, he has carved out a unique and illustrious niche in the culture of “outsider artists,” a term Doss himself uses to describe street performers who are untrained, largely unrecognized, and yet often marvelously talented.

The Lobero Is Your Living Room

This Tuesday night, the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra will give us a rare musical experience: the sound of a small orchestra. Classical music these days tends to come in very small or very large packages, either from famous soloists or big, bold orchestras. The in-between sound that privileged audiences of the 18th century hired for their “chambers” (big living rooms and dedicated music rooms-surely you have one of those, or both) hardly finds a place in 21st-century schedules.

Q:’What is the story of the wreck of the Santa Rosa?’

During the early years of the 1900s, the most economical way to move cargo was by ship, and California’s waters were inundated by steamers moving goods and passengers up and down the coast. One such steamship was the Santa Rosa, an ironclad more than 300 feet long, displacing more than 2,400 tons. This veteran of the California coastal route had been launched in Pennsylvania in 1884; its years of faithful service would come to a tragic end on a gloomy night in July 1911.

On the Mike

strong>ROCK ROCHAMBEAU: When hearing of this band, don’t think about news headlines regarding avalanches and school field trips. Rock Kills Kid is more interested in its electronic twist on the oh-so-popular sound styles of The Cure, The Smiths, and Joy Division. Just imagine if any of those bands had somehow skirted time and grew up listening to Nine Inch Nails and you’ll get the idea.
