A Message of Hope

Join McNair Ezzard for what promises to be an enlightening and informative free lecture this Saturday, November 17, at 7:30 p.m. at the Santa Barbara Public Library (40 E. Anapamu St.). HopeDance will host Ezzard as he speaks about the ongoing war, economic crises, environmental issues, and how we can change the world through everyday sharing, kindness, and solidarity. Ezzard is an ordained minister, healthcare administrator, a devout student of the teachings of ageless wisdom, and a Master of Wisdom.

• The historic Santa Barbara Courthouse (1100 Anacapa St.) is looking for volunteer docents. On Thursday, November 15, at 10:30 a.m., all interested parties are invited to the courthouse to enjoy coffee and meet other prospective docents in this informal introductory meeting. Week Spot Photo – Glass Love

The Contemporary Arts Forum plays host to Glass Love: Contemporary Art and Surf. The exhibit features works by young artists who have drawn inspiration from surfing and surf culture, including Amy Bird’s “Surfers #1” (pictured above). An opening reception will be held at CAF (625 Paseo Nuevo) from 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, November 17.

Collective Effort

Following the close of its last exhibit, the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum teamed up with Iridian Arts in an effort to put its dark show space to good use. The end result: Strike Series: Adventurous Music and Performing Arts.

In the mid ’90s, Michael Flatley took step dancing to great new heights with his almost inhuman leg flailing skills. And even though Flatley is no longer headlining, Lord of the Dance still lives on. • The Santa Barbara Charter School is holding a flea market on Saturday, November 10, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Featuring independent treasure peddlers and freshly brewed coffee for weary shoppers, the event’s proceeds will go toward building a new playground. The sale will take place in the Charter School parking lot (6100 Stow Canyon Rd., Goleta). Call 680-8635.

Theater is back and in full swing this season, and, at least in Santa Barbara, thespians are out to prove that taking in a play isn’t just for Mom and Dad.
