CORNY CRACKDOWN:

Thu May 18, 2006 | 12:00pm

In the wake of Sheriff Jim Anderson’s suggestion that deputies
consider enforcing immigration law, the department announced a
crackdown on street vendors, many of whom are natives of Latin
America. An Oxnard-based corn vendor in downtown Goleta was cited
for an unpermitted cart and was released early this month. The
department has reportedly received numerous complaints about the
noise, aesthetics, and legality of street vendors. According to a
recent department news release, the “Sheriff’s Department is taking
this kind of call seriously.” The county health department
spokesperson said that while there have been no reported cases of
illness caused by vendors’ corn, health inspectors confiscate
unpermitted vendors’ carts and foods several times per year in
response to neighbors’ complaints.
