Thu Jul 26, 2007 | 12:00pm

Though literacy is a backbone of our society, a number of adults in the Santa Barbara community are unable to read. The Santa Barbara Public Library System’s Adult Literacy Program is searching for patient and supporting volunteers to tutor community adults at all branch libraries. Tutoring is free and confidential and volunteer come in once or twice a week. Even a small time commitment can make a world of difference, opening doors to better opportunities and increasing confidence.

To become an adult literacy tutor it is mandatory to participate in an informational training course about the program. The next class will be held Saturday, July 28, from 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. at the Townley Room at the Central Library at 40 E. Anapamu St. in Santa Barbara . For more information or to register for the training class, call 564-5619, email bschwartzberg@santabarbaraca.gov or visit the Library’s website at www.sbplibrary.org.
