Helen Heightsman Gordon’s Voice of the Vanquished: The Story of the Slave Marina and Hern¡n Cortes, which recently won the best historical fiction award at the Hollywood Book Festival, tells the tale of the Mayan woman who befriended Cortes, became his interpreter, and helped the explorer conquer the Aztecs.
